Mayoral appointees help implement the Harris vision throughout the Administration. From receptionists to greet County residents to Directors who oversee large divisions, the opportunities to serve Shelby County are vast.

In 2018, Mayor Harris appointed over 200 appointees. The vast majority continue to serve in Shelby County Government today and will help carry out the vision for Our Next Era. Still, we welcome fresh ideas, perspectives, and approaches.

More About the Appointed Roles in Shelby County Government:

For those who are unfamiliar with the structure of Shelby County Government's Administration, we have provided a few details about a variety of offices. Roles are listed to help inform you as you consider how you might be interested in serving Shelby County Government. Please note that offices may not have current vacancies.

Leaders in this office work closely with Mayor Harris to design policy recommendations and programs that support constituent needs. Appointed roles include the Chief of Staff, Deputy Chief of Staff, various policy and advocacy roles, an in-office attorney, administrative staff, and a receptionist.

This office is led by recently-appointed CAO Harold Collins. Various staff lead the day-to-day operations of Shelby County Government. This office serves as the administrative liaison to local and regional officials and works closely with the Shelby County Board of Commissioners. Roles range from entry-level to senior leadership and include specialties like Neighborhood and Economic Development, Education, Auditing, and Emergency Management.

This office is led by a Chief Financial Officer and includes technical experts who lead budget planning, accounting, purchasing, and financial functions on behalf of all of Shelby County Government. In addition to a few appointed positions, other roles may be posted on the Shelby County Government website.

The Shelby County Attorney’s Office defends and advises Shelby County Government leadership decisions in all branches of government. Staff includes experienced and rising attorneys who serve in full-time or part-time capacities.

This office leads Shelby County’s recruitment, talent development, payroll, benefits, and retirement functions. They also oversee employee engagement and retention strategies. Appointed roles range from a Director to technical sr. managers/administrators and administrative support.

This office delivers the IT solutions that helps all of Shelby County Government deliver essential services to residents. It is led by a Division director and technical strategists (including database management, cybersecurity, application development, and service delivery).

This Division provides essential supports to residents when they need them most – rent and utility assistance, pretrial support, youth and family services, non-profit collaboration, and social services. Current roles range from Director to executive assistant and include leaders for the Crime Victims Center, Community Services Agency, and various grant administrators who support community needs.

Led by the Chief Public Defender and staffed by talented attorneys, policy leaders, a communications specialist, and administrative support – the Public Defender’s Office provides critical representation to defendants in need.

From unincorporated street repair to CIP project planning, the Public Works team supports infrastructure needs throughout the County. Appointees are technical experts in a range of fields and include Fire Department chiefs.

This joint office guides long-term planning on behalf of Shelby County and the Memphis-Shelby County MSA. Staff ranges from a Division Director to technical experts and community outreach coordinators.
